Freedom Festival 5K

The goal of the 2023 Freedom Festival 5K is to provide a community event to bring people together from both within and outside of Star Valley, promote health and fitness, create another event as part of the Afton Freedom Festival, and to benefit  Amputee Blade Runners, a nonprofit that provides free running/sports legs to active amputees throughout the country. In support of this event, we are working with local businesses, churches, community organizations to use this race as both a way to promote tourism and local businesses in Afton and Star Valley, as well as a fundraiser for the Amputee Blade Runners. All money from entry fees, donations, and sponsorship beyond race expenses will go to the Amputee Blade Runners.

There are minimal running events in Star Valley and through this race we want to promote the benefit and love of fitness. Star Valley and the surrounding area is known for its immediate access to wonderful outdoor activities, as well as spectacular backroads and hundreds of miles of trails for running. We hope to begin with a 5K race this first year and expand to include a 10K in the second year and beyond. This race is also perfect timing for the Star Valley Half Marathon, which falls 2 weeks later. Additionally, our goal to provide an event to attract adaptive athletes by including an Adaptive division. The first year this will be a single division with the hope to draw enough participants to break this into specific divisions. Idaho has a large Challenged Athletes Foundation chapter

and Salt Lake City and the surrounding areas have a significant adaptive athlete community that we hope to draw from for participation.

Race Details

The race will take place on Saturday, June 24, 2023, starting at 7:00 AM at the Elkhorn Arch in Afton. This will allow runners to finish their race and stay in Afton to enjoy the pancake breakfast, Freedom Festival activities, and spend time shopping and eating in downtown Afton. With this being a first-year event, and acknowledging the short lead time, we anticipate approximately 100 participants with the hope for many more! We also plan for this to be an annual event and to grow participation in subsequent years.
