Update 11/7/2016: Dear Friends, A recent storm in northern Haiti has caused severe flooding in and around Cap-Haitien, directly impacting SOIL staff and our clients in the region (read more here: https://www.oursoil.org/severe-flooding-devastates-cap-haitien-1611/). This is an area tragically vulnerable to flooding, which is incredibly damaging to peoples' health, homes, and livelihoods. From 11/7-11/15, the funds that SOIL receives through this fundraiser will be directed to flood relief in Northern Haiti to help these communities repair and hopefully become more resilient in the face of future flooding. Update 10/14/2016: The entire SOIL team is overwhelmed by the generosity and support that our community has come together to provide in the past week. We are honored that you have chosen to support SOIL, and grateful that we are in a position to provide effective, rapid, and 100% local responses to the devastation of Hurricane Matthew. As a team, we have decided to extend our hurricane relief-specific fundraiser through the end of the month, and to commit to continuing our relief efforts on a variety of fronts, including organizing additional trips to provide supplies, transfering funds directly to community leaders who can disburse relief on the ground, and even considering a sanitation intervention in some of the hardest-hit communities. We cannot express our gratitude enough, and hope that you will continue to spread the word and stand with SOIL and the people of Haiti as we recover and rebuild.
Update 10/12/2016: We continue to be humbled and amazed by the generous support pouring in from all of you - we cannot possibly thank you enough. Our truck will depart for Jeremie this weekend, and we are continuing to purchase supplies and construction materials for additional trips in the coming weeks. Please help us to make sure our trucks are full and our trips are as frequent as possible!
Update 10/10/2016: We met with the emergency response leader this afternoon and got a full accounting of the trip, including all of the supplies distributed. Based on the success of the initial trip, we began planning a second trip this coming weekend with the intent to get to Jeremie and some of the more remote surrounding communities. We're hoping to load two or three pickup trucks with food supplies and use our big truck to transport construction materials.
Update 10/8/2016: We are incredibly touched by the outpouring of support since yesterday - we've already reached our initial fundraising goal. The SOIL truck is heading south now to deliver supplies and provide as much help and support as we can. Please keep spreading the word, and contribute if you can.
SOIL is sending a truck with emergency supplies to affected regions this weekend, and if you would like to contribute to the relief effort, your funds will be used to purchase supplies and food and to deliver them to people most in need.
All of SOIL's relief efforts will be conducted in partnership with trusted local organizations.
We realize this is not the typical Haiti relief effort photo you see, but we wanted to share this picture to show you what our office looks like this morning. These donations were personally donated by SOIL staff when they heard a SOIL truck was going out over the weekend to affected areas. Your financial contributions will be used to purchase additional supplies and cover the cost of gas and any truck fixes needed along the way.
