Services & Impact

One Sun Health aims to engage a collaborative network of partners with local knowledge and resources to develop creative solutions to improve physical, social, and economic health in South Africa. One Sun Health’s innovative work is driven by the concept of building sustainability and leadership from a network of existing community resources. This network involves nonprofits, businesses, communities, individuals, academic institutions, government agencies, and foundations that share a commitment to skill development and identifying solutions to meet critical public health needs. Each stakeholder inputs different forms of investment and support, tailored to their assets to address public health challenges, specifically those involving infectious disease. Our job is to bring together these partners from a wide variety of industries to promote health education and social entrepreneurship. Through this, our ultimate goal is to foster new ideas and develop creative solutions to current public health issues, while making sure to use resources in ways that optimize impact.

Malaria Awareness Program: A key program of One Sun Health, MAP is a public health initiative that aims to create partnerships between health educators and community members in order to improve knowledge surrounding malaria. MAP involves an intensive community health worker training program followed by a multi-week series of education workshops, which take place at the traditional leaders home in various villages. To date, MAP has trained over 80 local health workers to empower over 900 community members throughout the Limpopo Province. In the near future, we hope to continue to scale MAP’s reach throughout other high-risk regions and replicate its model to improve other key health threats in these communities.

ENETI: A key program of One Sun Health, ENETI is a social enterprise initiative that aims to create pathways of economic empowerment by starting bed net businesses in rural communities. These small businesses partner with Kiwinet, a South African bed net company, to ensure a steady market and organize logistics of training, material transport, and more. Currently, two sewing cooperatives are working with ENETI: (1) The Zwonaka Sewing Cooperative in HaMakuya, in partnership with Tshulu Trust, and (2)  The Ntshembo Sewing Cooperative in Justicia, in partnership with Nsasani Trust. ENETI aspires to offer a South African-made bed net product to both local and commercial markets, in an effort to decrease incidence of malaria in and around rural communities.
