How can a viral outbreak be prevented from becoming a pandemic? That is a question that project GRFT is addressing. We now have very good vaccines to protect against covid-19 infections. Yet we are still faced with a continual pandemic. In developing countries of the world only 2% of the population have been vaccinated. Part of the solution to this problem lies in developing antivirals that prevent infection by different viruses and variants of viruses. We have found compelling evidence of such an antiviral in griffithsin, or GRFT. The purpose of our project is to biomanufacture raw materials, which contain GRFT, worldwide and at low cost.
