The Times-Picayune Doll and Toy Fund: 131 Years of Joy!

Bringing Christmas joy to New Orleans children for 131 years.

131 Years of Giving Joy

The line starts forming before sunrise at Xavier University's Convocation Center. Parents pull up in cars or step off the bus, holding their children's hands as they wait for the doors to open. Inside, hundreds of volunteers are already moving through rows of toys, unpacking Barbie dolls, Tonka trucks, LEGO sets and books that will soon be making their way into homes across the New Orleans area.

For generations, this has been a December ritual in New Orleans, one that begins with the generosity of strangers and ends with children having something to look forward to on Christmas morning.

The Times-Picayune Doll and Toy Fund began in 1895 with a simple goal: to make sure children in this city had something to open on Christmas morning. More than a century later, the tradition continues in a city where families have weathered more than their share of difficult times, and where the cost of making Christmas special can weigh heavily on parents already struggling to make ends meet.

Over the years, parents have shared their stories with volunteers, sometimes explaining that a lost job or an unexpected bill had left them wondering whether there would be anything beneath the tree. Others have spoken about working long hours and still having to choose between the things their families need and the presents their children have been asking for.

For many families, the holidays come with expenses that stretch an already tight household budget. Parents who spend the year making sure their children have what they need sometimes find themselves wondering how they'll manage the extras that make Christmas special. Over the years, families have shared how much the Doll and Toy Fund has meant to them, particularly during seasons when an unexpected expense or a change in circumstances made the holidays harder than they anticipated.

Those moments have kept the Doll and Toy Fund going for more than a century, with generations of New Orleanians contributing what they can to make the holidays a little easier for families they may never meet.

Last year, the Fund distributed more than 12,000 toys and educational gifts to more than 9,500 children across Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard, St. Charles, St. Tammany and Tangipahoa parishes. Hundreds of volunteers helped prepare and distribute those gifts, continuing a tradition that has become part of the city's Christmas season.

On December 19, 2026, the Doll and Toy Fund will hold its 131st annual giveaway, and the families arriving at Xavier will bring many of the same hopes that have filled those lines for generations. Some will have been planning for Christmas for months, while others will have spent much of the year trying to keep up with everyday expenses, hoping there might still be enough left to give their children something special.

The generosity of donors makes that possible, whether someone contributes enough for a single toy or helps provide gifts for dozens of children. Every contribution helps the Fund prepare for the thousands of families who depend on this annual tradition.

There is something remarkable about a city that has kept showing up for its children for 131 years, especially when so many of the people making it possible will never know whose Christmas they helped brighten.

If you can, please give to the Times-Picayune Doll and Toy Fund and help us make Christmas morning a little brighter for children across the New Orleans area.
