The 2016 floods have left the greater Baton Rouge area with historic devastation. Lives were lost. Many families watched both homes and vehicles flood Familes have been forced to empty their homes into heaps of trash in their front yards as they wait for debris removal. When schools were closed for the emergency on August 12, no one expected reopening would be delayed for more than three weeks until September 6.
There were eight schools that flooded and have been forced to relocate including Park Forest Elementary. These schools lost buses, cafeterias, libraries, classroom supplies, and instructional materials. The expected financial loss estimates for the district far exceed both insurance reimbursement and FEMA payments.
