Save Marty's Place

Help create permanent low-income homes in San Francisco for people living with HIV/AIDS.

Dolores Street Community Services (DSCS), the San Francisco Community Land Trust (SFCLT) and numerous LGBT community leaders have launched a community campaign to raise $250,000 by January 2015 to renovate and re-populate the house as an affordable housing co-op for people living with HIV. "Marty's Place" was founded in 1993 by Richard Purcell, a Franciscan friar, who came to SF in 1989 to take care of his brother, Marty, who was dying of AIDS. After Marty's death, Richard continued using his brother's apartment to take care of people with AIDS.

Before Richard died in 2011, he and the Aurora Dawn Foundation, which had been set up to help manage and operate Marty's Place, bequeathed the property to Dolores Street with the covenant that it would remain an affordable place for people with AIDS. When it was determined that the property was not viable for city-funded residential services, Dolores Street approached the SF Community Land Trust about using their established housing cooperative model.

Now, we are close to opening Marty's Place once more so it can provide a beautiful home for up to nine. We need just a bit more help to make it happen. Please spread the word and make a donation today.
