22 Veterans are committing suicide every day in America.  One a day would be too many.

The NVF's "Stop 22" Veteran Suicide Prevention Program focuses, in addition to crisis counseling, on addressing Veterans readjustment issues at the beginning of their transition to civilian life helping to put them on a path that leads away from isolation, depression and suicide.

The Lifeline for Vets (888-777-4443) is staffed by all Veteran counselors. I'm one of them.

Veterans need direct contact with somebody who understands what happens in combat and in the military, and what happens when they are literally dropped back in the middle of civilian life. They need contact with an experienced veteran.

Not every call we take is a suicide crisis call.  But every call we take is a suicide prevention call.

That’s because helping veterans get jobs is suicide prevention.  As is helping them find or keep housing, access their benefits, get medical care, financial help and counseling.  Because becoming suicidal is a process, a process that can often take years.

The stability that our transition services provides puts veterans on a different path than the one that ends with them taking their own lives.

Founded in 1985, the National Veterans Foundation has served over 400,000 veterans through its Lifeline for Vets. The NVF was founded and is lead by Shad Meshad, one of America's foremost Veteran counselors and advocates. He pioneered treatment for combat related PTSD, founded the VA's Vet Center Program and has been counseling veterans for more than 44 years.

The NVF's LIfeline for Vets assists Veterans of all ages and eras of service.

One of the oldest and most respected Veteran service program in the nation, the NVF's Lifeline for Vets bridges the gap between government and community based programs for Veterans, plugging them into the most appropriate resources for their particular situation.
